Meet three Florence adventurers.

Three people in our menswear buying and design team went off to Florence to take in the sights and sounds of the menswear trade show, Pitti Uomo. It put them in their natural habitat of trend spotting, street styling and gelato tasting (well, as far as Florence was concerned). But how did they arrive here and what can Primark offer people dreaming of a career in fashion buying or design? In their own words…

Scott

I was inspired to get into the fashion industry at a young age. I was working on the shop floor at Primark and it suddenly hit me: I wanted to work in buying, I wanted to be the person who decides what comes into our stores. So after gaining my business and fashion degree, I completed an internship at Primark which then led to a Trainee Buyer role.

One of the best things about my job is that no two days are identical. Some days you could spend all your time range building and reviewing trends; other days you could be in supplier meetings reviewing samples.

I’d always set my heart on designing within a creative industry. I graduated with a degree in landscape architecture but the thought of a career in the fashion industry kept nagging at me. So I decided to do a post grad in Fashion Buying and Management. During the course, I completed an internship at Primark in buying and, after a short time, switched to menswear design. I’ve never looked back.

We’re constantly reviewing emerging trends, looking at colour palettes, and sketching new prints and graphics. Going on inspirational shopping trips and to trade shows to see what new trends are developing is an integral part of this, which I enjoy enormously.

I’d always wanted to be a dressmaker. Unfortunately, that opportunity never presented itself, but I still went down the route of a career in fashion – something I adore. I applied for a postgraduate course in Fashion Buying in DIT in Dublin. From there, I worked hard and took big steps in my career. There’s so much going on but, for me, it’s the people I work with who make my job so special.

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

Ollie attended the Fashion Retail Academy in London. Everything he learned came together when he took a Primark internship. And he hasn’t looked back.
