Meet James. Assistant Merchandiser.

Dublin Head Office

I began my career in the fashion industry about five years ago, as an Allocator in London. I then worked my way up to Assistant Merchandiser, before being offered a role with Primark in Dublin. Having spoken to people here, I realised what a great opportunity it was to really enhance my career. Now, I work with suppliers across the globe, working alongside our buying team to plan ranges, while managing stocks and budgets for different regions. It’s all about making sure we have the best range available all the time.

Good changes to come

My department has just gone global, which means we're looking at all the countries that Primark have a presence in, from the UK and Northern Europe to Spain, Portugal and the US. Because of this, we’ve been fortunate enough to be given the support we need to be able to work with so many regions. We’ve been exposed to a whole range of useful training to assist us on our journey. It’s been great in helping me to adjust to the new ways of working.

The communication has been great and management have been very clear on setting expectations and explaining how our department is changing to meet the needs of our new global audience. With my background in London, I’m able to bring some insight on what works in the UK and reflect that in our plans – having that kind of influence on global stock, it really feels like I’m making a real impact.

Inspiring others

I have two Trainee Merchandisers who I work alongside. The environment we work in allows people at all levels to get involved and take responsibility in all aspects of the buying and merchandising process. I’m conscious to always involve junior members of the team in tasks that I think will benefit them. It’s all about giving them the tools they need to help them work at their best. It's very informal and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere around it. The best part about having a Trainee is seeing them go from strength to strength and knowing that you have played some part in that.

Becoming a part of the team

Starting in a new company and a new country was very daunting. But, from day one, everyone has involved me and I now have really good relationships with everyone on my department, especially the buying team. There have been group activities which involve everyone – making it really easy to meet new people. It works both ways too – I support them and help use my knowledge to their benefit as much as they do for me.

I’m able to bring some insight on what works in the UK.
