Meet Jessica. Store Manager.
I was studying when I picked up a part-time job at Primark in Telford. I did my two years at college and decided I wanted to go into retail management as a career, so took the opportunity with Primark. I got a Trainee Manager position when I was only 18. Now, I’m 23 and I’m a Store Manager.
The opportunity they give you here is incredible. I’ve gone from working here as a Saturday job to being a Store Manager in no time. And, I can’t wait to see what the next step is.
Becoming an influence for others
As an Assistant Manager, I was the Store Manager's number two. I acted as the support between the Store Manager and the rest of the management team. I looked after managers and developed them in their roles. Now, as a Store Manager, I'm the leader of the whole store. I have an Assistant Manager who supports me. What I've noticed as I’ve progressed, is that as an Assistant Manager and a Store Manager, the influence you have on people is amazing. You can change a store culture or the environment just from the attitude you and your managers have.
Having people there for you
What’s helped me progress quickly is that I've worked in many different stores. I've worked in Telford, Birmingham, Gloucester, Walsall and now Redditch. I've experienced loads of different styles of store, managed different people and adapted my management style. I've become a very well-rounded manager and I've learnt so much about the business throughout that time. I've also had loads of great role models. And I’m confident in my Store Manager role because of people who I can contact – even previous bosses.
Maturing with my career
I've changed so much from being 18. I know 23 is still young, but you do so much personal development in that time. The progression I’ve had has enabled me to deal with pressure better than ever. Primark has helped me to become confident and has pushed me to get to the next level at each stage of my career. The pressure that you have as you progress increases every time and I've learnt to manage it really well – I’ve matured.
As a Store Manager, the influence you have on people is amazing.
