Design Manager

Role: Design Manager (Store Design)

Purpose of role: Support the strategic development of the Brand by managing and delivering retail design solutions and principles from conceptualisation through to on site delivery. Ensuring all works are on trend, budget and time.


Duration: Permanent

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identify relevant stakeholders and work cross functionally to create commercial briefs leading the design, development and delivery of fixtures, furniture, departments, NBD offers and license areas for roll out into existing and new stores.
  • Ability to take projects from end to end, though design, planning, development and into store trials. Creating suitable presentations to gain sign off, also briefing and managing agencies to support as required.
  • Support the design of our stores, working with key stakeholders to optimize the customer journey and experience in balance with product density and presentation principles.
  • Coordination of bespoke design for flagship and enhanced stores, working with design, construction, prototyping and externals to ensure the appropriate design is delivered on time and budget.
  • Have full cognizance of Primark’s retail DNA and support its appropriate evolution through new retail design.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of long term 2D assets and signage to ensure they are integrated correctly into new designs and planning principles, collaborating with Brand to develop new tools where required.
  • Design support for refresh/refit stores, providing bespoke design solutions and advising on design priorities to suit project budget as required.
  • Design consultation service for the construction teams to provide bespoke solutions and design guidance for stores (new stores)
  • Support the development of strategic environmental enhancements to the retail space as required (eg audio and digital solutions.)
  • Create PBM packs through site visits, briefing meetings, layout and budget reviews to support the costing, presentation and approval of capex for store works.
  • Develop guidelines and presentations to support the delivery of new designs
  • Ensure approved guidelines and designs are added to the Guru system and provide training as required
  • Define and agree clear and acceptable projects timelines based on the requirements of the business, track projects throughout and ensure on time delivery.
  • Define project budgets then track and manage costs including agency fees, fixture costs and design cost per ft2 through-out the design delivery process. Working with other teams such as construction and procurement where required.
  • Be cost conscious through-out all projects, reducing capex cost where possible through management of external resources and value engineering of designs, without reducing quality below acceptable levels.
Key Interactions and engagement as part of role:
  • Regular interface and engagement with Head of Store Design, Space optimisation team, Visual Merchandising Team, Product Business Partners, Construction and Implementation Teams.
Essential knowledge, education, skills and experience:
  • A Degree in Architecture or Design, or minimum 5 years of relevant experience in retail design
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD / Sketchup, Office and Adobe applications is preferential
  • Familiarity with other 3D modelling software is beneficial
  • Must have a high level of design skills;
  • Ability to sketch and hand draw is an advantage
  • Knowledge of manufacturing standards, materials and construction methods
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, ability to trouble shoot during the course of a project
  • Strong organisational skills with a can-do attitude and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to lead and work well as part of a team and cross functionally with other teams to ensure
  • successful projects
  • Proven ability in managing sensitive matters whilst ensuring all Primark information remains
  • confidential to the business.
  • Must be able to work well under tight deadlines and able to reprioritise efficiently
  • Self-starter able to work under own initiative, taking projects from start to finish
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven ability in managing sensitive matters whilst ensuring all Primark information remains confidential to the business.
  • Be a collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal/communication skills, while demonstrating high levels of emotional intelligence and possess the ability to push back with professionalism. Proven ability in developing effective working relationships across all levels of the organisation.

  • Effective and persuasive presentation skills, including the ability to present complex information in an understandable manner to all areas of the business.
