Meet Karen. Assistant Merchandiser.

Dublin Head Office

I joined in May 2016 as an Assistant Merchandiser on menswear. Prior to that, I worked for a UK retailer on kids’ wear. Since joining Primark it’s been interesting to work so closely with the product and with our colleagues in stores. Reacting to the constant change in trends and our customer needs makes my job very exciting.

A fashionable choice

I’ve always worked in fashion in one context or another. I worked in the Penney’s store in Mary Street, then in the Sligo branch. I went traveling and when I came back, I did a buying and merchandising post‐grad in the London College of Fashion. From this course, I was offered an internship in a UK buying office. I came to learn about the merchandising function and I knew this was a career I wanted to pursue. I was then offered a full‐time job as a Trainee Merchandiser in the UK. Now, I’ve worked my way up to Assistant Merchandiser and have moved back to Ireland with Primark.

An Irish success

When I was in England, I knew that eventually I'd like to move home to Ireland, but I'd only do it for Primark – mainly because it’s a global company with good career progression. The fact that it was expanding into different countries and was successful in America when it first launched, that really enticed me to work here. Now, our teams are getting bigger and the merchandising team in Dublin has expanded massively in the last four years.

New people join regularly and I enjoy the opportunity to be involved in their training. They learn from me, just as I learn from my Merchandiser on a daily basis. It’s mainly on‐the‐job training, learning from one another, but if you want to get more technical, there is specialised Excel training and also sessions on personal effectiveness, time management and presenting.

A part of something bigger

The main reason I joined was the growth of Primark. There's definitely a lot of opportunity and a lot of markets that are untouched, so that's going to be exciting for the future. What really drives me in my role, is the amazing product range that we offer at competitive prices. We have such a large customer appeal and it’s really exciting to get to work so closely with product planning.

The main reason I joined was the growth of Primark.

A common goal

We’re all striving for the same thing at every level and every function of the business. If we see an area where there's room for development, we’ll work towards it and improve it. It’s great to take such ownership. When I started, I had a big brief to manage, working with my buying team to deliver an amazing range across six countries, two of which are new markets.Being part of such a strong team and working with our store colleagues to deliver a range that we’re all proud to offer our customers, makes my job so worthwhile.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

It’s my job to look after sales and stock control for the health and beauty department in the US, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.
