Designer

Job Title: Designer - Nightwear
Reports To: Head of Design

Purpose of the Role:

In this role, you will be accountable for department trend identification and application. Collaborating with fellow product designers across the business you will create strong, fashion forward, commercial and global ranges that identify with the Primark brand. You will drive the delivery of innovative, new product opportunities.

As Designer, you will work alongside Buying and Merchandising functions to create trend led product that will surprise and delight our customers whilst remaining commercially relevant. You will build effective communication channels with your stakeholders and influence in key range building meetings, ensuring to represent the Design community’s vision and direction.

You will maintain an awareness and understanding of current and evolving social and economic landscapes, with a focus on sustainability.

This role will support product development through the completion of focused technical tasks. You will be responsible for development and allocation of resource and capabilities [internal and external] to meet section/departmental Design requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Trend & Research

• Accountable for trend identification and application for departments
• Undertake regular research and competition shopping to inform Design direction
• Methodically research colour/trend direction and shape
• Prepare trend information “in looks” and also commodity shape libraries
• Present trend predictions through mood and trend boards to Buying, Merchandising and Design Leadership
• Maintain an awareness and understanding of current and evolving social and economic landscapes, with a focus on sustainability.
• Monitor, report and react to product sales performance
• Continually monitor critical path, reacting to changing trends.

Direction & Weighting

• Through trend research and range content communicate timing of trends for the season
• Recommend trend direction on a regular basis
• Re-assess seasonal trends and present quick response messages visually
• Weight colour pallets by category
• Weight key must have's by category
• Weight fabrics by importance by category

Product Design

• Responsible for making impactful, commercially viable decisions related to range building for sign off at leadership levels, which support the delivery of successful product ranges.
• Maintain and follow critical path dates
• Manage the design of pre-agreed ranges
• Continually review the range from design to sample stage with buying

Leadership

• Lead manage and mentor a team of Junior Designs to deliver Design application across departments.
• Set ambitious but realistic timeframes for delivery for self and the team.
• Set clear performance expectations for the team, monitor and managing performance
• Provide feedback to the team in a timely and motivating way, encouraging colleagues to stretch and give their best, while recognising successes.
• Develop the team’s capability, spotting talent and identifying stretch opportunities whilst encouraging team to drive their own development.
• Lead as a driver of innovative, new product opportunities.

Collaboration

• Collaborate with fellow product designers across the business to create strong, fashion forward and commercial global ranges that identifies with the Primark brand.
• Engage with and influence stakeholders in all relevant business areas to deliver commercially successful product ranges for Primark.
• Ensure clear communication channels are established with Buying and Merchandising teams to effectively deliver Design briefs to required standard.
• Partner closely with Buying & Merchandising teams to build ranges, react to sales figures and evolving consumer trends.
• Build and maintain productive working relationships with preferred suppliers aligned to Primark strategy.
• Manage the delivery of outsourced design, and coordinate/ manage Supplier Designers and Freelancers
• Maintain an awareness of wider business sustainable strategy and targets.

Key Interactions and Engagements as part of this role:

As Designer, you will work closely with Primark’s Buying and Merchandising teams, as well as collaborating with other Design teams across all product categories to ensure alignment and a unified Design vision across our brand. You will represent your product categories and bring forward ranges for sign off at senior leadership meetings. You will also be expected to represent your product categories on working groups and forums across departmentally.

Knowledge, education, skills and experience:

• 5 years of experience in a Design role with at least 2 years in a people management/team lead position.
• Relevant qualification in fashion design or equivalent experience
• Strong working knowledge of Adobe Software including Illustrator and Photoshop.
• Strong understanding of seasonal trends with the ability to translate this in both a creative and commercial manner in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated experience in growing and managing a team
• Strong relationship builder with a proven record of managing stakeholders cross functionally.
• Excellent communication and engagement skills.
• Experience managing 3rd party suppliers and Freelancers.
