Development & Test Manager

Role: Technology Development & Test Manager

Purpose of role: To actively build and progress the capability for development and test to enable an approach aligned with industry best practice that will drive benefits for Primark. The development & test manager will advise and lead on technical solutions contributing to the approach for Primark applications

Reports to:Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
Key Responsibilities:
  • Champion the development & test function within technology, overseeing all aspects of technology for their area; from enabling the delivery of strategy whilst enhancing the technology service
  • Actively build and progress the capability for development and test to enable an approach aligned with industry best practice which will drive benefits [Time/Cost/Quality] for Primark
  • Advise and lead on technical solutions with our internal teams/outsourced partners, having a ‘hands on approach’ contributing to the approach for Primark applications including the communication of strategy, business cases and contractual arrangements
  • Active engagement with Primark’s integration centre of excellence ensuring standards/principles aligned and developed in line with industry best practices
  • Construct, review and provide guidance on development and test strategies / plans, evolve and embed agreed processes
  • Work with Primark’s information security and data protection teams to ensure that standards are reinforced and complied with
  • Have a metric based approach with a structure to enable auditing and managing vendor performance by reviewing/identifying trends and improvement opportunities. Benchmark and work to continually improve methods and practices with both internal and external teams
  • Plan and prioritise work schedules and scope within agreed timescales
  • Develop and maintain, new and existing partnerships, managing suppliers to meet Primark goals
  • Expand the tools, techniques and standards for development and test ensuring licensing tracked and compliant


Essential knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Proven development and testing experience with processes and methodology in a structured environment with a comprehensive understanding of the full lifecycle: Agile & Waterfall
  • Technically strong across a range of IT disciplines and systems with demonstratable knowledge of industry best practice and current trends
  • Experienced with source code management
  • Tooling & automation experience
  • Demonstrated ability in developing a culture that embraces innovation and challenges existing paradigms without compromising performance
  • Proven commercial experience and the ability to manage budgets and suppliers to deliver value for Primark
  • Track record in a senior management role with a technical focus [experience within the retail industry an advantage]
  • IT related 3rd level qualification [or equivalent related experience which demonstrates in-depth expertise]
  • Desirable Professional Certifications: SCRUM, PRINCE2, MSP, ITIL, ISTQB

  • Effective and persuasive presentation skills, including the ability to present complex information in an understandable manner to all areas of the business
  • Experience of vendor management

  • Pro-active and hands on - responds purposefully to events
  • High level of energy, curious minded, a positive can-do attitude
  • Ability to operate within a highly pressurised and fast paced environment, consistently delivering results and achieving corporate objectives on time and within the agreed parameters
  • Sharp awareness of commercial reality; while being innovative and forward thinking
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours as required
