Meet Ollie. Trainee Buyer.
My introduction to the world of fashion was when in I was in year 10 at school and the class went on a store visit. That was it, I became fascinated by the power of visual merchandising. From then, I researched the different jobs in the industry and applied to the Fashion Retail Academy in London and was fortunately offered a place.
Everything I’d learned really came together when I took an internship at Primark. It was a great experience and I didn’t hesitate to accept when I was offered the job as Buyer’s Admin Assistant. I progressed in this role and have recently been promoted to Trainee Buyer, with responsibility for men’s jerseys.
New challenges every day
I always come into work with a bit of a bounce. First off, I check emails which gives me an idea of my ongoing workload and sets the day’s agenda. From there, I can be managing samples by posting, filing, arranging, measuring and raising orders, or trend spotting at festivals. What I love is that no two days are the same. I really enjoy the breadth of my job, whether I’m in the office or out and about, and the pace we work at is breathtaking.
Inspiration for the next big seller can come from anywhere. The menswear calendar is always a busy and interesting time. For one month in every season, it’s all about the guys! Primark’s men’s buyers get to hop across the globe to scope out the latest looks at the various festivals.
But I also get inspiration from walking the streets. I love London as there’s a range of styles, from skate to street and punk. Believe me, you never know what will come of wandering through Covent Garden market in London and looking at vintage garments and trinkets!
Primark is a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry because we’re making great gear affordable to all. It’s big and exciting, but also competitive. I would say to anyone looking to forge a career in fashion buying that, no matter how many times you get knocked down, get back on your feet and remain positive, determined and ambitious. A can-do attitude is vital, and wherever you come from, you can make it at Primark.
