Meet Paul. Indirect Tax Team Lead.

Primark is a great retail brand. I was working in accounts for another retailer when I spotted an opportunity to work for them. That was in 2007; I haven’t looked back since.

Love what you do

There’s a genuine team spirit here so I felt right at home straight away. If, as I was, you’re keen to progress and want to make a contribution, the business will invest in you and guide your potential. Back in 2013, I started studying to become a qualified accountant with the full support of the company.

Fast forward to 2014 and I joined the Indirect Tax Team. There was a lot to learn but I thrive on a challenge. I did well, made progress and, in 2016, was promoted to Team Lead. In the coming months, I will qualify as a fully fledged accountant so I hope to move onwards and upwards.

Big responsibility

I’m responsible for ensuring the Indirect Tax Team file tax returns; complete, correct and on time. Indirect tax payments are important as any errors would leave us exposed to penalties and risk damage to our reputation. So it’s vital we get this right.

Primark isn’t just about great fashion at amazing prices. There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make this happen. I’m really proud of what my team and I achieve. No two days are ever the same, we file indirect tax returns for twelve countries across two continents. Planning is key; I need to be prepared for whatever the day brings and support the team to deliver.

Always improving

Developing my team is really important to me. Monday begins with a planning and strategy meeting for the week ahead. Knowledge sharing and ideation are vital to the team dynamic, so we also have regular ‘Power Hours’ and ‘Lessons Learned’ sessions to help share best practice.

In terms of my role, I know I can count on support and I’ve benefited enormously from team lead-focused training. There’s a very supportive environment here which opens so many doors to progress.

So many opportunities

Head Office is a fabulous place to develop your career. The building is designed to encourage open communication and cooperation. We have breakout areas and meeting spaces which are ideal for sharing ideas and exchanging knowledge.

There are always new opportunities here. Primark is getting bigger and better all the time. There’s always something new to learn and plenty of opportunities to add value. We’re a remarkable success story and I’m proud to be part of it.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

I joined Primark in 2015 after spending four and a half years in Financial Control at another retailer.
