Meet Dougie. Assistant Buyer.

I started out at Primark with a two-week internship back in the summer of 2015. Shortly after, I began my career here as a Buyers Admin Assistant. After spending 12 months in that role, I became a Trainee Buyer in t-shirts; the perfect department for development as it’s probably the fastest paced of all. Before I knew it, I was promoted to Assistant Buyer.

Meeting suppliers

We have suppliers all over the world and it’s part of my job to meet with them. In Turkey, Bangladesh, or Portugal, for example. Yes, there’s a lot of international travel and that’s what surprised me most about this role. Primark is great at giving you the responsibility you need when you ask for it and then backing it up with the support required to help you get through it. It’s really quite remarkable when I think about how far I’ve come in such a short time. From admin assistant to mentoring trainees. I feel proud of what I’ve achieved.

From concept to product

You need to be quite creative to do what I do, but also good at communication and building relationships. Primark is a people business, so you’re going to have to be a people person too. But when all is said and done, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a concept turn into a product that then finds its way instore on the high street. It’s a special feeling.

Not a morning person

Your Day Your Way is Primark’s way of creating more flexible working arrangements for their people. And it’s made such a difference to me. Having the freedom to set your own start and leave times, working one day a week from home, leaving earlier on a Friday. It goes a long way towards creating a better work/life balance. Especially for someone like me who definitely isn’t a morning person!

Working at Primark means constantly encountering new challenges. The fun part is figuring out how to deal with them, together.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

Ollie attended the Fashion Retail Academy in London. Everything he learned came together when he took a Primark internship. And he hasn’t looked back.
