Meet Emma. Womenswear Buyer.

I knew I wanted to work in fashion from a young age. And where did this inspiration come from? My grandma, who was a dress designer! I studied Fashion & Design, and landed a job. But I felt there was something missing in what I was doing. Then it clicked – so I took a course in Fashion Buying and instantly knew that was what I wanted to do.

Education was important in helping me get my perfect job in a fast-paced industry, but there’s more to it than that. Namely, ambition. Just keep going for it; if you really want something, don't give up on your goal.

Fashion buying – me to a tee

As an Assistant Buyer specialising in fashion tee-shirts, my role is incredibly diverse. From developing ranges based on the latest trends, to translating them into commercial products, and keeping up with the fast-paced office environment, it’s an exciting job that makes the most of my skills.

Typically, I’ll spend the morning replying to suppliers’ emails, before reviewing and analysing sales. As the day progresses, I might be attending supplier or internal meetings, fitting samples on models for approval and building on the particular range we’re focusing on.

It’s absolutely fantastic getting to develop a product specifically for trends – especially trends I’m excited about – and then seeing it translate through into sales.

Best advice

Perhaps you’re dreaming of working in fashion and influencing which stock you sell. My advice to aspiring buyers is to get some retail experience, even if it’s just working in a store on a Saturday. This experience is super-beneficial because you need a keen eye to be a buyer, and an understanding of consumer wants and needs. Beyond that, a buying course is also invaluable.
