Ollie attended the Fashion Retail Academy in London. Everything he learned came together when he took a Primark internship. And he hasn’t looked back.

I used to be a manager at the bookies, until I got pregnant. I found the hours unsociable after that, so I took a year out to spend with my daughter. After that, I fancied a career change and wanted to go into fashion. So I joined Primark 13 years ago, initially starting as part time on the shop floor before moving into the cash office where I progressed to fulltime Cash Office Supervisor. I decided to move back to the shop floor and in 6 months was promoted to Trainee Manager. I’ve been Department Manager for the last 3 years.
The only way is up
My store manager had my back from day one. The training has been amazing – so many courses to choose from and all of them setting me up with the management skills I needed to progress. The Supervisor’s Academy is Primark’s internal resource for all these courses. They set you up, not just with all the skills you need, but give you an understanding of the business and what they expect from you. I even got an NVQ! They really invest in you, and to be honest that kind of loyalty deserves loyalty. It’s the reason I just want to give back now.
Learning something new every day
I initially thought Primark was going to be a stepping stone for me. How wrong I was! 13 years later and I’m practically part of the furniture. I don’t see myself ever leaving a place that’s given me so much. Communication skills, team work, incredible support. I started from the bottom up and even now, I still feel like I learn something new every day.
Flexing to me
Primark is one of those rare places that adapt around you. They’ve really stood by me, given me the hours I need so I can do things like the school run. And on top of all that, they’ve supported me to grow. In between making sure the customer journey around the store is the best it can be, keeping our service top notch and looking after my team, I couldn’t be happier.
You’re given structure within your workplace and you always know what’s expected from you. But it’s always fun.
Other reasons to join
Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.
I always knew I’d leave my home town eventually to explore further afield.
