Meet Kim. Trainee Technologist.

I initially thought I wanted to be a teacher, so I studied Educational Training in college. But I soon figured out I wanted something more creative. So I picked up the family trade and became a hairdresser for 5 years. I still felt like something was missing though. I needed more analysis, more numbers. After having a bit of a rethink, I decided to go back to school and do a Fashion Buying and Merchandising course, which led to a 4-year stint in buying for the Lingerie department here at Primark. After becoming friends with a Technologist here and seeing the work she did, I thought it would suit my personality better. So I switched yet again and now I couldn’t be happier.

Fit for purpose

I support our Technologists on Lingerie. For me, that means largely working on fits. Buyers develop the product and we make sure it’s fit for purpose. Models come in twice a week for sessions where they try on the garments and we examine the quality, sizing, and basically take it apart to make sure everything is perfect. Our job is to make sure the customers get the best product possible. It’s a flexible, growing role that exists to maintain standards and constantly improve the perception of quality that we offer.

Organisation is key

You need to be organised if you’re going to do well here. People tend to come at you from all directions, so you need to react quickly. Be flexible and have an eye for detail. There’s quite a bit of problem solving. We often take garments apart to understand what the issue is if they seem a little imperfect. That takes a focus on product and an analytical mindset.

Kim at work

Up, down, left and right

Progress at Primark can pretty much look like anything. You can not only move up, but sideways too like I did. I’m really proud of the transitions I’ve made, and I’ve felt massively supported all the way. Don’t be afraid to be brave here and take a chance. There are so many opportunities up for grabs and the business is constantly ready for change. You’re always included in skills training even if it doesn’t directly relate to your role, so there’s always a chance to fall in love with something new. Just go with it and see where you end up!

At Primark we understand the importance of quality and what that means to our customer.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

Ollie attended the Fashion Retail Academy in London. Everything he learned came together when he took a Primark internship. And he hasn’t looked back.
