Meet Mark. Head of Central Supply Chain.

Islip Warehouse

I'm currently leading the Strategy and Development team on an interim basis alongside Operations Development and business critical projects for supply chain. This involves giving direction on where new depots will be, how large, automated or not, based on our growth into different new countries and increased participation in current ones. The Operation Development team look to increase efficiency and enhance our current operations. Having a few different teams to manage, gives me a great variation in role and a great deal of freedom and flexibility.

Extensive travel is a requirement of the role, since Christmas, I've been in Germany three times, Denmark, Holland, Poland and the USA. It is important we understand not only what our competitors are up too but also the operational differences in other nation’s e.g In Scandinavia; the depots tend to be far more automated. You’d think that the European nations would all be the same because of how we’re all connected, but the Scandinavian countries are far more advanced in using automation in their distribution facilities.

Primark – in a league of its own

I've been with Primark for four and a half years and it feels like the smallest big business I've ever worked in. Unlike other businesses, the people right at the top are genuinely interested in what you’re doing. I’ll see Leadership team and Board members around all the time and they’ll often say hello. It gives you an appreciation of the roles that people perform at every level. You don’t tend to see people leave here, we’re growing and we’re given opportunities to take our work to the next level. By taking operations in house, we know we’re trusted to do good work.

Balancing the books

In terms of work life balance, I've got two young children and it’s not been a problem. We are just getting a new puppy to add to the fun! Whenever I've had anything that I've needed to be at home for, and then the flexibility is there. I manage an under 10s boys football team in Coventry, which keeps me busy at the weekends.

I’ve never been more proud

I’m proud of how I've played a part in such an impactful part of the business. Not only for my own success, but for those who have done well with me. Some of the people we've brought in from other businesses have done an absolutely fantastic job for us, they've come in, been promoted and they've moved on – it's great to see and be part of! To bring other people through and see their careers progress is very rewarding. There's a real sense of achievement within that.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

I'm one of the Shift Managers on a rotating day shift. I directly manage nine Team Managers and anything upwards of 150 colleagues.
