Ollie attended the Fashion Retail Academy in London. Everything he learned came together when he took a Primark internship. And he hasn’t looked back.

I moved to London in 2006 after graduating in Fashion & Textiles back home in Northern Ireland. Living in London was great for me as I got loads of experience working with all kinds of big high street fashion brands. But I felt like it was time for change, so I went travelling around Asia and Australia for 3 months! When I came back, I wanted a job somewhere different, and the opportunity to work for Primark in Dublin came up. I seized it and haven’t looked back since!
Staying on-trend
My department is Womenswear and my section is Nightwear. Many of us talk about about the fast pace at Primark and this is what makes it great. I often start the day with a team breakfast, where we make plans for the day ahead. Next, I might be reviewing the shop floor, looking at macro trends research, focusing on product innovation across silhouette, colour, fabric, print and graphics, or analysing market intelligence. We go to a lot of trade shows, and take some incredible trips for inspiration. I’ve already been to places as far flung as New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. As a designer in Primark I identify emerging trends always looking for newness, we create trend packs and edits for the buying team. We have regular Collaborative workshops to review fashion credentials throughout the season.
Every voice is heard
I feel so lucky working with so many talented people, each with so much to give. Every voice is heard, everyone is important. We all work together to land the right product at the right time. There’s a real sense that everyone cares about the product and wants it to be the best it can be. I’ve made the best friends and had the best times. We know how to have fun, but that isn’t so hard when you love what you do so much.
Getting the best out of you
Your Day Your Way is such an amazing initiative, particularly for a designer like me. I love having the freedom to do what suits me best in order to get the best out of my day. I’ve found that flexibility super helpful. It also means that come Friday, there’s always an extra special buzz about the place. Because we get to finish at 2pm, it’s a very social environment and there is always something going on! Either a late lunch in a new restaurant or going on a hike. There’s always something to look forward to.
Everyone is really passionate about what they do. The standards are high, and the people really do care.
Other reasons to join
Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.
I always knew I’d leave my home town eventually to explore further afield.
