Meet Sarah. Assistant Buyer.

I’m the Assistant Buyer on Primark’s Womenswear Licensing department which means I look after all the character based designs that we sell in Primark. I work with external brands and licensees to build an amazing product range. I suppose I’m in a bit of a niche area, but wherever you work in Buying at Primark it’s sure to be exciting and challenging.

I’m fully involved in the buying cycle, from the creative process to financial analysis and many stages in between. My job is all about interpreting trends, working with suppliers who are in sync with what we want to offer our customers, and making sure what we do provide, doesn’t break the bank.

Fashion-forward

Working on the licence department is enormous fun! I collaborate with designers from licensing companies and I am involved from the very start of the design process. My job is to combine current trends with branded characters to make the final piece as fashion-forward as possible. I work across all product areas including sweatshirts, T-shirts, swimwear and denim, just to name a few. Every project brings its own challenges… but there’s one I‘m dying to tell you about!

Whistle while I work

For our Spring 2018 range, I worked with Disney to create a collection which celebrates all their classic characters. I made sure we featured a whole range of Disney characters, as everyone has their own view of what is classically Disney!

A big part of my job was to ensure the range looked as fashionable as possible whilst still staying true to the characters on the garments. I started by sitting down with the Disney designers to pull together inspirational mood boards that reflected how we wanted the collection to look. The designers worked on a range of pieces which included key season details – for example stripes and embroidery – to ensure everything looked as on trend as possible.

There are so many cute and fashionable things you can do with the different characters. My favourite pieces from the range would have to be the Mickey bag – it’s a really nice nod to Disney without being too obvious and the little Marie camisole is super cute too.

What it takes

Keeping on top of all that’s hot in fashion means scrutinising trends and keeping an eagle eye on our main competitors to keep up to date with what they’re doing in terms of price, quality and value. You’ve got to be a great negotiator and have excellent communication skills to enable you to maintain flexible and beneficial supplier relationships. You’ve also got to have great attention to detail to make sure that everything from specification to finished garment is top notch in terms of quality.

My favourite thing about the job would probably have to be the fact that I’m surrounded by clothes all day! Also, every day at Primark is different which keeps the job really exciting. If you’re like me, you’ll simply adore a buying career at Primark – helping to build our ranges from the ground up and to see them come to life in store is a really rewarding feeling.
