I was a store manager at a shoe shop in Leicester 20 years ago when I saw a recruitment ad for Primark. I went for it, working in Brighton before moving across the country and into Holland. It’s been an amazing journey; we have new stores opening everywhere. I’m hoping for a secondment to America next.
Open to all
After spending 10 years at our store in Leicester, I was part of our expansion programme in Holland. Honestly, I had managers talking to me about moving down and looking after stores there. If you’re up for it, you really can. It’s so flexible. I’ve never seen such incredible career progression. It’s one of the few places where you can go from working weekends to managing stores in 3-4 years. It’s fair to absolutely everyone. But a big part of the reason isn’t just the opportunities that come with being part of fast-paced, expanding business. It’s the training too.
It’s go go go
The training techniques here are what set you up to develop quickly. Primark are excellent at helping you adapt to their pace and expectations. When I first started, it took me a while to get used to the pace even though I joined at management level. But they give you everything you need to succeed.
Ahead of the curve
This is a business that has moved with the times in every way, from technology to the customer promise. They’re always one step ahead, always learning themselves. But they’ve remained true to their values of being affordable and accessible to all. And maintained a great family atmosphere. Very few businesses today are like that.
The career progression is absolutely endless. You’ve got weekend colleagues on 20-hour weeks who are now store managers in Belgium, France and Holland.
Other reasons to join
Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.
I always knew I’d leave my home town eventually to explore further afield.
