Meet Abi. Assistant Merchandiser.

Reading Head Office

I came here straight from the Fashion Retail Academy in London, studying a merchandising-specific course. The academy works closely with Primark, so I was able to do three weeks’ work experience here. I loved the people I was working with and it was a really good environment. That’s what made me want to apply. It helps that I shop at Primark – the interest was always there.

Reaching outside my comfort zone

I started as a Trainee, and then got promoted to Assistant Merchandiser, which was a new level of responsibility. As a Trainee, I was accountable for the reports and analysis, but as an Assistant Merchandiser, I’ve taken ownership of a section where I’m responsible for all stages and I’m able to present the work that I’ve produced in meetings to senior management. Here, they push you out of your comfort zone to a point where you’re achieving things you wouldn’t have on your own. They give you ownership of projects, but they guide you through it as well. It's a good combination of the two.

Balancing my day

Each day is different at Primark, which makes time go very quickly! Depending on where you are in the season impacts what your job list entails. There’s a great deal of planning that goes into the ranges that you see in store, but you have to be flexible and resilient when reacting to sales and trends. Prioritising is key with this job role and we work very closely with the buying side to make sure we’re all on the same page.

Hard work pays off

Having a good relationship with the people you work with is so important, the job is so much better because of it. Outside of work there are annual social events and within teams often payday drinks. They even support you outside work too – I know someone who does refereeing in the Olympics and they gave her the time off to do that. It's a good dynamic.

They give you ownership of projects, but they guide you through it as well.

Turning weaknesses into strengths

As a Trainee, there were lots of courses I could go on. There were job‐specific courses and behavioural training, which helped me develop as a person and move up in Primark. They're always available too, which is great. Something that I needed to work on initially was my confidence in presenting, so I went on a course to work on this. At the beginning, they record you doing a speech, which really highlights areas that you need to work on. All the points that you learn throughout the course really makes a difference and you can see the contrast from when you started.

Other reasons to join

Your experience at Primark is about so much more than your job. It’s also about our people and our culture. Our beliefs as a business and our aims for the future. It’s about all the exciting, empowering, amazing things that make us who we are – and you who you are.

It’s my job to look after sales and stock control for the health and beauty department in the US, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.
