Trend report: Creating Change together

How Primark think about charity, community and giving back.

Colleague smiling

Hi, I’m Amy, and I’m the Senior Inclusion and Community Impact Manager here at Primark.

When I think back to the beginning of my career, the idea of businesses investing in their communities and forming meaningful charity partnerships wasn’t always front and centre. Corporate giving was often a “nice gesture,” something done quietly in the background or driven by small groups of passionate colleagues. Lovely, but not always seen as essential.

Fast forward to today, and things could not be more different. Across industries, and certainly here at Primark, inclusion and community impact is now a core part of who we are and how we operate. What began as occasional charitable giving has evolved into a purposeful, values-led approach - supporting and partnering with those who make a difference every day.

So, what changed?

People expect more from companies now (and that’s a good thing)

One thing that’s really clear is that people want to feel proud of where they work. They want their employer to stand for something, to care about people, and to make a positive difference. And that goes for customers too - especially in the communities where we have stores.

More and more, candidates tell us they’re looking for more meaning in their day to day work. They ask about our charity partnerships, our approach to inclusion, our local impact, how we support vulnerable groups, and how we give back.

And honestly, I think that’s brilliant. It pushes businesses - including us - to do better.

Why charity & community work matters so much

For me, the most exciting part of working in this space is seeing the shift from ad‑hoc giving to strategic, long-term partnerships that create real change. More and more this is seen as a core part of how responsible businesses show up in society.

But corporate giving isn’t just about funding. It’s about:

  • Listening to what communities actually need
  • Partnering with organisations who know how to drive meaningful change
  • Engaging colleagues so they feel empowered to contribute
  • Creating programmes that last - not just moments that pass
  • When businesses invest in their communities, communities thrive and our colleagues feel a stronger sense of connection and pride too.

What we’re focusing on right now

At Primark we want to help people to look and feel good at prices that don’t cost the earth. In our team, this means helping real people in the real world move forward, even when life holds them back. We do this by supporting women and girls to boost confidence, tackling barriers to help disabled and neurodivergent people to shop, work and belong at Primark and uplifting the communities where our stores are based.

And here’s how we do it:

Long-term charity partnerships

We’re focusing on building partnerships that allow us to make a real and sustained difference. These relationships go far beyond fundraising - they involve volunteering, skills-sharing, awareness campaigns, and supporting partners during critical moments.

Local community giving

Every store sits within a unique community, each with its own needs and challenges. We support grassroots initiatives that matter locally - from youth services and housing support to education programmes and local charities.

Colleague-led impact

One of the things I love most is how enthusiastic our colleagues are about giving back. Whether it’s fundraising challenges, volunteering days or charity collections, they continually lead the way bringing energy, compassion and creativity.

Moments that matter

We support colleagues and communities through significant life events and difficult moments -because community impact is not just outward-facing. It also lives within our walls. When colleagues feel supported, they pay it forward.

Looking ahead

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made, but there is much more to do. Community impact is not a finished project - it’s a long-term commitment to show up, stand up, and support the people who need it most.

The exciting part? Everyone at Primark can play a role in shaping what comes next.

We believe that when we work together, we can create real, lasting change. And that is something worth showing up for every single day.
